What are you up to this weekend? How about a trip to the farmer’s market. I love waking up early Saturday morning sipping on coffee while checking out what the local farmer’s are selling at the Trout Lake farmer’s market. Since, having kids I have learned a thing or two about making the most out of my farmer’s market.
1). Shop Early
If you want the best selection show up early. You can stroll through the market and see what is being offered, whose has the best selection and price before purchasing your produce. Being an early bird may allow a little extra one on one time with the farmers.
2). Come Prepared
With so many different vendors and things to see its easy to get distracted. Before you leave make a quick meal plan for the week and bring a grocery list. Check out what is in season. Eat local is a great website which features all the local markets, foods in season, and local food events.
3). Make it a family event
The farmer’s market is a great place for kids to learn where their food comes from. Kids can enjoy food samples, face painting, and music. Make it a fun experience, allow your kids pick out a new fruit or vegetable . Encourage your kids to talk to farmers about their food. Arriving early will allow your kids to talk to farmers and choose their produce before the crowds set in.
4). Ask questions
Ask farmers about their farming practices. You will be surprised to learn that many small farmers do follow organic farming principles but do not have the designation because it is a lengthly and expensive process. If something looks unfamiliar ask the farmer how to prepare it.
5). Bring your own reusable bags
Do your part on cutting down waste and bring your own reusable bags.
Do you go to the farmer’s market? What tips do you have to make the most out of your trip ?
